Co-Scholar of the Year speech - James Torres

'I would not be where I am today without this Scholarship and the countless doors that it has opened.'

*2016 Co-Scholar of the Year James Torres spoke at the June 26 Summer Outing.

Thank you all for selecting me as the 2016 Co-Scholar of the Year. I cannot express how excited and honored I am to have been chosen for such a prestigious award. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without this Scholarship and the countless doors that it has opened. I also cannot say that I would be on this stage talking to all of you without the support and leadership that is so abundant in this family we call the Evans Scholars.

Support and leadership is what I would like to discuss today. Many of you are probably familiar with the phrase, "you are only as good as your weakest link." That is not true whatsoever for the Evans Scholarship. We are only as good as our leaders. Being a leader does not necessarily mean you hold an executive board position, or are considered to be an upperclassmen, but someone who supports and guides others through any situation, and most importantly in times of need.

Throughout my time as an Evans Scholar I relied on the support of others and also allowed others to rely on me. For those of you who are new Scholars, please do not be afraid to ask your peers, fellow Scholars and ESF officials for help. The same goes for you, active Scholars. For all of you, continue to support one another and maintain vigilance for everyone's health and well-being.

Finally, I'd like to thank The Minikahda Club for having us here today and to thank all of you for coming. A special thank you to the WGA Directors and officials for being the best leaders that we could ask for, and for keeping Chick's dream a reality. Thank you.
